How to choose a course to study in university – After secondary school education, the next phase is higher institution; be it university, polytechnics or college of education. But most times, the graduating secondary school students do not take time to think of what next, they are carried away with the joy that they have finished secondary school.

It is important for every secondary school leaver to have a quiet moment alone and think of what to study in university because without thinking of it, you find yourself making a bad decision which will affect you in future.

Before enrolling into the university, you have to make plans, analyze your abilities, know your career goals and most importantly, know what you would like to become in future. You can’t just wake up one morning and enroll into the university without having in mind what you really want to study; NO it’s not done that way.

The best way on how to choose a course to study in the university is by sticking to your field of study while in secondary school. WHAT DO I MEAN? If you are an art student, you equally should go for art courses offered in higher institution because there’s no way you study art in secondary school and want to offer science course in university; it’s not done that way. Same thing applies to science students too.

Secondly, know the subjects you are good in while in secondary school. For instance, a student who is good in mathematical courses can apply to study and engineering or technological courses in the university such as Computer engineering, Agricultural technology, computer science etc. Likewise, a student who is good in art subjects such as English, Literature, government etc can apply to study Mass communication, English/Linguistics or any related course.

In most cases where you find it difficult or confusing to make up your mind on the course to study in university, you can seek advice from academic advisers, career counselors, or those that have passed through university.

1. Choose a subject that interests you

You should always start off with choosing a subject that interests you. If you don’t have any interest in a certain subject, then you won’t enjoy studying it. You need to find something that you’re passionate about. If you’re not sure what you want to do after school, think about what you’d love to do. Do you want to work at a hospital? Or maybe you’d rather become a lawyer. Whatever you decide, make sure that you really care about it.

2. Decide whether you want to go to a public or private university or even polytechnics

Not all courses offered in university are offered in polytechnics or colleges, so you need to decide whether or not you are going for university, polytechnic or college of education.

3. Find out if you need to take prerequisites

If you plan on majoring in a particular field, you’ll probably need to take some prerequisite courses before starting college. These courses help you prepare for the rigors of college-level classes. However, they aren’t necessary for everyone. So, ask around to see what courses you might need to take.

4. Seek Career advice

Talk to people who have gone further or who has taken the step you intend taking. Seek advice from career/academic advisers or from those that have passed through the university. You can put their advice to your analyses and get the best answer you are seeking.

5. Pray – Seek God direction

Most people do not believe in prayer but I tell you today that prayer is the most powerful tool in life. In whatever you do in life, always seek for God direction because it goes a long way in shaping your future for the best.

Believe in yourself, dream big! Go for what inspires you, what you love doing and can never stop doing. You can do it.
